Piping Plover (PIPL) Observations: Daily monitoring for breeding behavior stopped on July 15th. Monitoring for migratory PIPL and other migrant avian species is being conducted on a weekly basis.

PIPL Summary: Bodie Island Spit currently has two active broods (one brood with two chicks and the other brood with three chicks and one egg still being incubated). Adults and fledglings are still being observed at Cape Point. The PIPLs observed on North Ocracoke are thought to be migrants. On South Point one fledgling continues to be observed and one nest is still active. Many migrants are passing through the South Point area. One PIPL, banded in the Bahamas, was observed on South Point on 7/12 and then seen again on 7/15.

American Oystercatcher (AMOY) Summary: Currently there is a total of three AMOY broods and twenty five fledged AMOY chicks. Bodie-Hatteras District has three AMOY broods and nine fledged chicks. Hatteras District has nine fledged chicks. Ocracoke has seven fledged AMOY chicks.

PIPL Summary: Migrants are beginning to pass through the area so it is no longer possible to distinguish the breeding birds from the migrants. One PIPL, banded in the Bahamas, was observed on South Point on 7/12. As for the known breeders on Bodie Island Spit, there is still one active nest and one brood with two chicks. Adults and fledglings are still being observed at Cape Point; however, breeding appears to be finished for the season in this area. No PIPL breeding activity has been observed this week on North Ocracoke. On South Point one fledgling is still being observed and one nest is still active.

PIPL Summary: One nest on Bodie Island Spit is being incubated. On Cape Point we have one brood and at least two pair have been actively scraping. On North Ocracoke PIPL brood OI04 hatched three chicks and the last time a chick was observed was on 6/20. On South Point we have one brood and one active nest. Scraping continues to be documented on South Point.

American Oystercatcher (AMOY) Summary: We currently have eighteen AMOY broods, two active AMOY nests and one fledged AMOY chick. Bodie-Hatteras District has six AMOY broods and two active nests. Two UNB pairs are actively scraping. Hatteras District has eight AMOY broods, two pairs actively scraping and one fledged chick. Ocracoke has four AMOY broods and one pair on a scrape territory.
